Reflections on New Development Strategies for ASEAN in a “New” World

By Elizabeth Thurbon.

It was a joy and privilege to participate in the 11th Future Leaders Program with the dynamic SOAS Development Leadership Dialogue team in Malaysia - a dedicated week of discussion, debate and learning with some of the best and brightest economic, energy and environmental leaders from across ASEAN.

Thank you Profs Ha-Joon Chang and Christopher Cramer and Angelica Baschiera and team for developing and facilitating such an excellent program.

And thank you to the Khazanah Research Institute team for such fantastic insights, hospitality and support during the week. Yin Shao Loong and Nick Khaw I learned such a great deal from you both! And an honour to meet and exchange ideas with Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Jonathan Pincus, Erik Berglof and other stellar speakers. What a line up!

Joining a reflection panel with my wonderful colleagues Prof Keun Lee and Prof Yuen Yuen Ang - facilitated by Prof Ha-Joon Chang - was a particular highlight - as was discussing the Green Energy Statecraft opportunity with colleagues from across the region.

And of course the chance to share ideas with the inimitable Prof Joe Stiglitz! Could the week have been any more fulfilling? I don't think so!
